Many people trade goods for goods. We sell stuff for stuff. We buy stuff for stuff. We sell stuff for stuff. We buy stuff for stuff. We sell stuff for stuff. We sell stuff for stuff.
The problem arises when we trade not goods or items, but services. We sell services for services. The problem is that services are usually intangible. The problem is that when services are intangible, their value can change over time. If your services are good, they will continue to be good. If your services are bad, they will be bad. If your services are average, they will stay the same. If your services are poor, they will be poor.
Some services are valuable because they are intangible. For example, if you have a good reputation for being a good listener, you can build up a long list of people who are happy to listen to you. Or if you’re a good negotiator, you can get a lot of business from people who are happy to negotiate for you. Or if you’re a good writer, you can get a lot of feedback from people who want to publish your articles.
In software, countertrading is basically the same thing: You will exchange the same thing for the same thing, whether it is money, an item you are selling, or something else.
In the same way you are exchanging an item for an item, you are also exchanging something that is good for an item for something that is good for an item, and so on. So if you have a good reputation for being a good listener, you can make a list of people who are happy to listen to you. If you are a good negotiator, you can get a lot of business from people who are happy to negotiate for you.
The same principle applies to countertrading. A good negotiator is a good listener. If you are a good seller, you will be able to get a lot of business from people happy to sell to you. The same goes for countertrading, but countertrading is much more like a business negotiation than a sales transaction. You may be a good seller, but you are only a good seller if you are also a good listener.
The first is a hard truth, and I want to make sure people realize it. Even though we may have a very good idea of how we think, we don’t really have a good idea of how others think. We are not just good at doing a particular thing, we are good at thinking about it, too. This is one of the things that makes it so easy for us to lose sight of what we know.
For example we may think that the most important skill in our relationship is that we are both good listeners, and that means that we should probably do a lot of listening. Maybe we should get together on a regular basis and really get to know each other. But we may not always be able to just get on the same page, or we might not even understand what each other is trying to say.
I think we can start by trying to avoid thinking that way.
